Aperture is 'the size of the opening in the lens when a picture is taken.'
These images show me experimenting with aperture. I used the same shutter speed of 1/80 and changed the aperture each time, these are the images I got.

As you can see increasing the aperture lowers the amount of light going through the lens making the image look darker.
